I guess if you are a committed Democrat in Bedford or elsewhere in the Commonwealth you perceived the election of Scott Brown over Martha Coakley as an aberration that never should have been allowed to happen. Republicans can't win in this state for a host of reasons, and the only way for it to occur was that the voters of Massachusetts really did not believe that a qualified candidate like Attorney General Martha Coakley could possibly lose to a right wing tool driving a pickup truck. It was not voter angst, it was a failure to take the possibility of a Republican win seriously enough and too many voters stayed home safe in their expectations and warm from the cold snow on special election day.
But things didn't go as expected. Brown won the Kennedy seat, giving Republicans across the country a belief that the tide was turning on hope & change. Well, November was coming, and things would be back to normal. This is Massachusetts. The home of Harvard, MIT, Wellesley and so many other great institutions. This is the bluest of blue states. We won't get fooled again. November 2010 came, and we showed em all. The voters got back on track and made the smart choices. The right choices. On statewide offices. On Congressional races across the state, and every local position, Bedford swept all Democrats into office. Most being re-elected, as Bedford votes reliably Democratic and had not voted a plurality for Scott Brown. We would turn out in record numbers and make sure the rest of the district and the state would not get fooled again.
We also voted to increase our taxes and continue with more of the same big state government ever-increasing spending. No money problems in Massachusetts.
But what does that really mean? Was it the smart thing to elect all Democrats? Most of the country was voting out Democrats and electing new people into office in staggering numbers. Why was Massachusetts different? What did we know that the rest of the country did not?
Won't Get Fooled Again
We'll be fighting in the streets
With our children at our feet
And the morals that they worship will be gone
And the men who spurred us on
Sit in judgement of all wrong
They decide and the shotgun sings the song
I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
Then I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again
The change, it had to come
We knew it all along
We were liberated from the fold, that's all
And the world looks just the same
And history ain't changed
'Cause the banners, they are flown in the next war
I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
Then I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again
No, no!
I'll move myself and my family aside
If we happen to be left half alive
I'll get all my papers and smile at the sky
Though I know that the hypnotized never lie
Do ya?
There's nothing in the streets
Looks any different to me
And the slogans are replaced, by-the-bye
And the parting on the left
Are now parting on the right
And the beards have all grown longer overnight
I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
Then I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again
Don't get fooled again
No, no!
Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!
